The Tooth Story

16 November, 2005 - 10:47 am

Well, I finally have some time to write…that’s what happens when you have the flu.

Yesterday when the chickies got home from school, H asked if she could have an apple for her snack. She was determined that her first loose tooth would fall out. So I cut up an apple for her and she went off happily to sit at the table and eat it.
I was on the phone with G, when suddenly I heard H crying from the dining room.

”I swallowed my very first tooth!!”

Needless to say I hung up immediately.

Poor little one was devastated. I sat down in the rocking chair and pull her onto my lap to give her a minute to cry. Of course K started crying, too. I’m still not really sure why. And I felt like crying too. It was her first tooth and I hadn’t even gotten to see it. She just sat there on my lap, crying and feeling around in her mouth – sure she hadn’t really swallowed it.

I admired the empty space and kissed her on the cheek. Then we tried to call Daddy to tell him what happened. He wasn’t at his desk and I didn’t want H to leave him a tearful message so I hung up.

Then that little ‘inner voice’ I’ve learned to listen to told me to go look for the missing tooth. I wasn’t going to find it I was sure. But I set H down in the rocker and headed for the dining room. I figured that just maybe the tooth may have ended up on the chair cushion or the place mat.

I stepped over the threshold between the kitchen linoleum and the wooden dining room floor and heard something skitter (H loves this word) across the floor. I flipped on the light and kneeled down to find a tiny little tooth on the floor by the baseboard.

H was thrilled of course – we called G back to assure her that the tooth had been found and could be redeemed by the tooth fairy for cash.

And H had quite a story to tell Daddy when he came home.

Unfortunately, H didn’t go to school today to share her story with the class. She’s home with me with the flu.
