It is amazing to me how mentally taxing a puppy can be.

This past Monday morning we picked up this little guy here.

Isn’t he cute?

Thankfully he sleeps through the night in his crate. But housebreaking is exhausting. It’s harder than training a child. The child usually tells you. Right now I’m going on scheduling and instinct.

I just took him for his eight-thirty romp outside and then I brought him in and put him in his crate, He’s whining piteously – but quietly – he’s not happy despite the fact that he is clearly ready for a nap. He’s been crated in the mornings every morning this week because I’ve been at work. But he is promptly let out when I get home to do his business outside and to play with the kids before lunch. So this morning, despite the fact that I’m not working today he needs to go in the crate. I hate to do it…..on the other hand I need the time to do some housework without having to keep and eye-and-a-half on him to make sure he doesn’t go on the floor.

The crate is the main advantage between puppy rearing and child rearing. Society frowns on sticking your kid in a cage while you go to the store or do the housework…

Go figure.
