I Love Vermont

12 April, 2005 - 3:10 pm

Today it doesn’t feel much like spring. The birds are quiet, the wind is blowing. Nevertheless, we’ve had some promising signs. Birds are getting ready to build nests. The chickens are laying more eggs. We hear geese nearly every morning – returning from the Southern climes.

A couple weeks ago we decide to have dinner at one of the local pizza places. On the way I saw what I thought was a deer decoy in someone’s yard. Then D noticed it and we turned around to get a better look because it wasn’t a decoy it was a deer. A small herd of deer in fact. Maybe six or seven. They were still there when we came back an hour or so later.

At twilight this past Thursday D noticed a bird of prey perched on the electric wire outside the family room. It was small and flew away quickly but I grabbed the bird book anyway, to see if I could find it. It was a kestrel. Since then we’ve seen both he and his mate several times. Apparently, kestrels find a favorite spot to hunt from – preferably telephone poles or wires. These two certainly look like they are ready to set up housekeeping.

Then Sunday night while we were making dinner D noticed a movement out near the woods on the East side of the property. It was a doe. He called the girls over and we picked them up so they could see out the window over the kitchen sink.
The doe climbed the embankment and jumped the guard rail into the road. She paused a moment then tried to duck under the guard rail on the other side. She changed her mind and decided to jump over it – then she was gone with a flick of her tail. Then we went back to what we were doing like it was an every day occurrence. Which is OK by me.

I Love Vermont.
