31 August, 2005 - 3:16 pm My head hurts The storm that was Katrina is here in Vermont. The change in pressure is making my eyes ache. The pictures of the Gulf Coast are simply beyond words. Selfishly, I can’t help thinking --- I never got to see New Orleans the way it was… I can’t begin to imagine what the people there are going through. Anyone who lived in Biloxi or New Orleans is now homeless. Right now thousands of tired, hungry, devastated people have been loaded into 500 buses to ride the eight hours from the Superdome to the Astrodome. It’s beyond understanding. Also beyond understanding is the man I just heard on the news. He is the head of the largest ambulance company in Louisiana. He was on TV a few minutes ago complaining that the National Guard is “too busy rescuing people” off of rooftops and overpasses to help evacuate the hospitals. I do not exaggerate when I say that this man’s tone of voice suggested that the military was somehow at fault for the situation. I shut off the TV. I just paid $3.11 for gasoline. Up here the price has gone up roughly sixty cents in six hours. We all know there is no reason for it whatsoever. Whether you think the price of gas is the fault of the envior-wackos or the speculators or the Bushes, the democrats or the Fossil Fuel Fairies, one simple fact remains. The price is artificially inflated. The Cumberland Farms where I bought the gas purchased it for a price based on the situation as it was before the storm. Three-eleven is unadulterated bullshit. It’s easy to be pissed about it. But looking at the pictures one gains perspective. I am not on a bus somewhere in East Texas. I’m not sitting - hungry and waiting - on an overpass or rooftop in 90 degree heat. I’m here at home. In a minute I’m going to go get some sinus meds for my aching head. I’ll wash it down with clean water. I’ll plan dinner – maybe something special to celebrate the blessings we have – which I will prepare here at home. My family will eat around our own dining table. But first I’m going outside to walk the family dog with Katrina. |
