Birthday Cake

03 December, 2005 - 8:23 am

H is having her belated birthday party today. I told her she could have seven guests and we made out a guest list of 9 kids because some kids – inevitably – can’t make it. I figured this would be especially true this time considering I made the calls on Tuesday morning.

Fortunately??? Everyone I invited said they would be here. Oh goody. With the addition of a couple siblings and the chickies – It will be a dozen kids. That I have to watch every second because last year we had an accident and H’s little ‘boyfriend’ broke his foot so badly he was in a cast until March.

D and I are just glad that we didn’t end up responsible for the medical bills.

So with invites out of the way the next order of business was the cake.

I don’t just make birthday cakes – I make cake things. Trains, cats, lions, roses, etc. So I asked Heather what kind of cake she wanted.

“A Tyrannosaurus Rex!”
“Okaaaayy. – Does it need to be a whole T-rex, or just his head?”
”Just his head will be fine.”
I breathed a sigh of relief. That would be easy. I took a piece of paper and a pencil and drew a T-rex head shape on it. “OK, how’s this?”

”Perfect!! Now,” H said, slipping into her take-charge voice, “His mouth will go here full of sharp teeth.”

I drew a mouth and divided into triangles. “Good, His eye goes here – no, bigger than that. Good.”

”All right," I said, "so the teeth will be white and the lines between the teeth are black. What color is a T-Rex.”

”His skin is green,” she replied matter-of-factly like every mother should know T-rexes are green, "and his eye needs to be blue. And down here we need to make splotches of red.”

“Splotches of Red??”

”For the dripping blood.”

This last bit was punctuated with hand movements.

How do you put dripping blood on a birthday cake?? (Notice I didn’t say why do you put dripping blood on a birthday cake.)

Red M&M’s.
