CrossRoads Farm

Exhibit??

16 March, 2005 - 8:42 am

There is gallery space in the lobby of the hospital in Randolph. Some of the folks in my art groups have don shows there in the past and Tom has suggested on more than one occasion that I call the woman responsible for keeping that space filled. So finally, after literally months of encouragement I called her.

She invited me down to meet her and to take a look at my work and have me fill out some paperwork. It was a very positive conversation. So I took three pieces down. “January,” “One Morning” and “The Tree.” They were carefully wrapped in newspaper so they wouldn’t get scratched. The lady was eager to see the work – she doesn’t have anyone to fill the space between the end of this week and the middle of April. But as I unwrapped the pieces I sensed a problem.

She doesn’t like my work.

Suddenly, instead of having me fill out paperwork, she wanted me to leave the pieces with her so that they could be reviewed by two of the hospital administrators. I told her I couldn’t just leave them without a receipt of some kind. So she suggested I come back Wednesday to met the two administrators. Wednesday morning she called me to let me know that I would have to leave some of the work so the three of them could meet and decide.

Now, you’ve all seen my work. As G and I put it – they aren’t pictures of naked people killing puppies. I don’t really care that this woman doesn’t like my work. I don’t have that kind of ego. I don’t like Jackson Pollack – but he’s hanging in the Met and I‘m not. So what??

As it turned out I couldn’t bring my work back down there at all last week, and truth is I could have made the time if I’d really wanted to. But something about the whole thing pissed me off. So I waited for Monday – Art Day and I went to talk to the art group about it before I made up my mind. Kate has shown her work there before but that was before the change in management. Kate actually had a reception – as though she were having an actual show. And Tom said that his, more recent show had a few speed bumps like this and he was wondering if he would do any more in the future. Both of them considered a receipt for the work an absolute must.

Finally they both agreed that I should go ahead and give it a shot. Especially since I hadn’t shown any of my new stuff. The Chandler show that I did last year is coming up. But for now, why not go for and see if they let me hang it. At least then I will know.
