Valentine's Day

14 February, 2005 - 9:47 am

D and I aren’t big Valentine’s Day people. I’m not the high maintenance type and he’s very forgetful – you do the math. We don’t need a calendar to tell us today is the day to make the other person feel special. You should be doing that everyday.

Besides, I’m a candy hoarder. Always have been. We only got candy on holidays so I wanted to make them last. My mother hardly ever baked cookies – dessert just wasn’t on the menu. So while Gumby was happily overdosing on sweets at Halloween I kept mine in a box in my room. My Halloween candy lasted until Christmas. I’d end up having to throw some of them away because they’d be stale. It made a kind of backward logic in my young mind.

Adulthood for me meant food freedom. But for some reason I still hoarded candy. Kit Kats and Almond Joys are my favorites; but I hardly ever buy myself a candy bar at the drugstore. It will sit in my car for weeks until it has frozen and thawed so many times it’s spoiled, or until it melts all over everything.

This past Yule, D bought me a box of Russell Stover candies. For two days I didn’t open it. My mother is not a candy hoarder – if you catch my drift. When my folks had left I opened up the box and chose a candy from the map on the inside of the cover. A fruit nut cluster thing. It was scrumptious. I savored those chocolates. In a little over a week I went through the whole box. The only thing I hoarded this time was the Butter Creams. I saved those until last and shared a few with D. I told him how much I’d really enjoyed my chocolates.

This morning when I came downstairs there was a box of chocolates and a card for Valentine’s Day. He is so great. And I love him so much – well, I can’t even tell you.

I’m holding off opening it until after lunch.
