A New Day

02 February, 2005 - 10:42 am

I haven’t chimed in on the subject of the Iraqi election
yet. I keep thinking of my Iraqi counterpart. She’s in her thirties with children. She’s living in a war zone. It’s hard and frightening but it’s better than living under Hussein. There are American soldiers everywhere, they make mistakes and don’t understand the Iraqi people as much as they could but she feels they are trying to help. Of course she wants them to go home. She knows how it hurts the hearts of women waiting for their men to come home. And she is ready for the Iraqi’s to have their country left to themselves. Hopefully, it will be soon. Not yet though. There is still too much to fear from those who would have it the old way. Saddam’s way.

When election day came my counterpart took her children with her. She wanted them to see. This time the people would actually get to choose. This is not a farce. She took the ballot and got to vote for whoever she felt fit to lead. They wanted her opinion. As satisfied as I felt on our election day – this woman must have been elated. Simply brimming with joy over something that is so commonplace to those of us in America that most of us don’t even bother with it.

My counterpart stepped out into the sunshine of a new day for her people. She knows it in her heart. She held up her hand stained by ink that will be a reminder to her that she was allowed to participate in that new day.

I can’t tell you how happy I am for her.
