It's Like Magic.

19 January, 2005 - 2:47 pm

I’m not a big fan of disposable anythings. I don’t buy flushable toilet brushes or bleach wipes for my counters. I use a washcloth on my Clorox mop and throw it in the laundry when I’m done with it. I even hide the paper towels when my parents come to visit. So when I saw the first commercials for ‘magic Erasers” I wasn’t even interested. I barely paid attention. I didn't like the 'just throw it away' angle and they couldn’t possibly work that well.

Guess what…

They work just that well.

I love my Clorox mop. It’s so easy to use that I let H do the floors, but it doesn’t scrub. And when you deep fry dinner as often as I do there is bound to be greasy grime nearly everywhere. So a couple weeks ago I took some Comet and a scrub brush and I scrubbed the floor. While I was doing it Nellie called. She told me next time I should use a Magic Eraser. She loves them so much she buys them in bulk at BJ’s. I was still skeptical. I really hate to needlessly add to the landfill.

Then I mentioned it to G. She told me the same thing. “Try it.” You won’t even believe it. So yesterday I picked up a package when I went to get bread at the Grand Union. This morning G called me and as we chatted away I decided to get some housework done. Dishes, laundry etc. that I can do one-handed while I talk to G. Well, I picked up this magic eraser and started wiping the side of the refrigerator with it. All those grimy little greasy, ugly spots wiped right off! Like…..MAGIC! I couldn’t believe it. I wiped (noticed I didn’t say scrubbed) down the whole refrigerator - the cabinet -the dishwasher – the doorframes - a couple places on the counters that I would normally need baking soda and elbow grease for. I couldn’t believe it. I started looking (hello?) for more messes on which I could apply this miracle of modern technology. Of course the more you clean the more dirt you find. But then I noticed a couple stains on the floor I’ve been battling. Gone. By this time my eraser was pretty beaten up. So I took a rest.

But then…..

I got a brainstorm. My Achilles heel of housework is the shower stall. I have yet to get it really clean-looking. Disinfected certainly, but spot and stain free? Forget it. So I took what was left of my magic sponge up to the shower stall. I wiped (noticed I didn’t say scrubbed) away the stains. Like….like…..MAGIC! Yes, there is hardly anything left of this sponge already. But I can’t believe how much cleaner “clean” is. I need more of these little things. And yes, I am inordinately excited. And yes, I am certain that one day I will find that I’ve given myself an increased risk of any number of horrifying and debilitating diseases because I’ve ever come in contact with one of these things.

But it’s like MAGIC!
