Weird Weather

03 January, 2005 - 8:28 am

My parents were here for round two of their visit over New Year’s. We had thought about going out or having extra people over but the weather was iffy so we just played Trivial Pursuit and had a few snacks.

My folks left yesterday about eleven in the morning. D and I tried to just relax for the rest of the afternoon but the kids needed quite a bit of attention. D said he was jealous because I was going to have the whole morning to myself this morning.

That was before the freezing rain started. It rained ice all afternoon yesterday. The windows on the south side of the house were covered with a thick layer of ice and I started to get the feeling that here might be a school delay this morning. Well, apparently on top of the ice that fell all afternoon it rained most of the night, and while it may have been rain in the air it froze solid as soon as it hit the ground.

At quarter to three in the morning K woke me up because of a bug bite on her leg.

At 4:24 Mittens caught a vole in the playroom. D tried to grab it to throw it outside but it escaped under the playroom couch.

At 6:20 Aerosmith woke us long enough for D to hit the snooze bar.

And at 6:27 the morning guy woke us again….with school delays.

Our Town wasn’t delayed.

We are closed.

And there will be no getting to art today either. I don’t think I can get out of the garage if I had to. There is no snow on the ground up here. Everything that looks like snow is a thick layer of ice, tapering away to what just looks wet but is actually sheets of ice anywhere from a quarter inch to and inch and a half thick. There are whole areas of our lawn that a bare grass. That’s pretty rare in January.

It looks like March. And it’s 42 degrees out. But we can’t go out to play. It took me three times as long to feed the chickens than it normally does because I had to walk so slow.

I got a feeling it’s going to be a long day.

Oh, and the vole?? Mittens was attacking a pillow that was lying on the floor this morning. D flipped over the pillow. No vole. Later I figured out why. The critter was inside the pillowcase. I took it out on the porch dumped the contents out and the vole skittered away under the woodpile.
