around the farm favorite things
obligatory diaryland reference
05 December, 2004 - 8:45 am It’s 40 degrees outside right now. The chickens have been fed and the girls are getting a late, for them, breakfast. When I got out of bed 20 minutes ago the sun was out. Now thre sky is this amazing shade of blue gray and the clouds look like snow. Unfortunately it’s too arm for snow. So I’m going to have some coffee and check the weather link I have on my favorites – then go out and move wood. Moving wood is another outside chore I do. I don’t like this one as much as snow removal. But this one is more optional and I often have help. I take the garden cart or the kids sleds depending on the current weather conditions and bring loads of wood for the big woodpile behind the house around to the front porch where I stack it for our daily use. I’m here by myself today dso I will be doing it on my own. It’s not a big chore but it takes much longer without help and I busted the zipper on one of my snow boots yesterday. D is doing his drill for the VTANG this weekend. That’s ‘Vee-Tang’ for those of you who haven’t learned to speak Military. It stands for Vermont Air National Guard. I now know that we will never speak Civilian again. By the time D leaves the VTANG he will have 20 years or more in the service and will be drawing a military pension. Trust me, we will be speaking Military for the rest of our lives. Which is OK by me. I forgot how to be a civilian long ago. The sky is getting darker even as I type so I better finish up. Once the wood is moved I will be decorating. Everything I can get done today except the tree. We’ve got a great deal on a tree. Much better than last year, we just have to be home together long enough to go get it. Thee is a couple a mile and a half from here who are selling trees off their tree farm by word of mouth only. Millie gave me the heads up on it Friday. $15.00 - cut your own. I can’t wait. I’ve never picked out a tree that way. D’s family used to do it that way every year. So I’m kind of exited. Well, I’ve got to get to it if I’m going to beat whatever precipitation that is about to start. I’m betting on “god-damn sleet.” |
