CrossRoads Farm

Dear Santa,

01 December, 2004 - 8:24 am

It’s fairly common knowledge, though not necessarily true, that the Inuit people have more than 100 words for snow. This is always said with a great deal of surprise for some reason. Their world is snow for most of the year. And don’t kid yourself, we American have dozens of phrases for snow. Take this morning for example---

We woke this morning to a winter wonderland. It is just cold enough to snow instead of rain so it is of the wet, packed variety – perfect-for-snow-men-snow. This in contrast to the snow-that-doesn’t-stick, or fat-fluffy-flakes, or goddamn-sleet.

At any rate the Holiday season is underway here at the Crossroad. Yesterday I had the radio tuned to a local station that plays nothing but Christmas songs during the holidays. When H got in the car she was thrilled. When we got back here she asked me if I could call Santa on the phone. “I need to talk to him.”
”Well, honey, he is awfully busy this time of year. Can we write him a letter instead.”
She thought this was a wonderful plan. This first version of the letter started:

Dear Santa,
I want to know if I have been good enough for presents.

We got distracted from that project by the phone so later she had me sit down here at the computer and take dictation. H’s letter says:

Dear santa,
I want to see one of your elves. And I would like to meet you.
Of course I have been good enough for presents, because I didn’t have spankings in a long time.
There are lots of things in the magazine that I would like from you. Please bring them all to me. And extra for K – or I can share.

From H

What a little sweetheart.

Yesterday I got out the boxes of decorations and hung the lights on the porch while it was 50 degrees out. I cleaned off my worktable so I can wrap presents up there, and I pulled out the winter placemats. Today the last of the autumn decorations will go back in their boxes to be put away for the year. The serious decorating won't start until this weekend and I have no idea when we will get our tree. But it's that time again.
