Gearing up for Thanksgiving

22 November, 2004 - 3:20 pm

The turkey has been freed from the icy depths of the chest freezer and moved to the fridge to thaw. Cookbooks and scraps of paper with lists of dishes and ingredients litter my end of the sofa. Thanksgiving week is under way.

Yesterday I tuned into a show on Food Network called Everyday Italian I was delighted to find the cook on that show preparing her turkey for the oven exactly the way I do. I must be doing something right. I’ve been watching Food Network more than usual lately. It remands me why I stopped. It’s a dangerous habit. I get hungry and start trolling the kitchen looking for something to munch on.

Our Thanksgiving feast will be fairly traditional. This is the weekend of my birthday so Thanksgiving dinner is really comfort food for me. Turkey, mashed potatoes, peas and “Grandma’s Baked Carrots” will be the bulk of the meal. Stuffed celery, olives, and homemade pickles. No homemade bread for the main meal though. D and I both love the brown and serve rolls you get at the super market and that saves me a ton of work. I’ll make a pecan pie for desert. And for my birthday, a chocolate cream pie instead of a cake. I’ll have to check with H and see if she wants cupcakes for her birthday.

The guest list? Blessedly short. Gumby and my Aunt D and that’s it. I’m going to re-invite my parents. But they are a long shot. It should be a good time.

After dinner we will have the traditional brewing of the beer. The first time D ever brewed his own beer it was on Thanksgiving Day. I was pregnant with K at the time and the smell of the wort made me so nauseous I had to spend the afternoon on the deck. Thankfully we lived in Arizona at the time.

I’m looking forward to Thanksgiving more than usual this year. I don’t know why, I just am, and I’m going with it. But first, the to-do list. Which is why I’m posting about Thanksgiving today. I have plenty to do before dinner on Thursday. Everything from cleaning bathrooms to ironing the tablecloth.

And so I’m off…….
